Our product design starts with desk research and collaboration with the farmer and our partners. We summarize our key hypotheses and take them to the field. All our agricultural research and innovations are meant to optimize farmers' investments and get us closer to our goal of improving their livelihoods and maximizing their profits.
All our innovations and new climate-resilient inputs are first launched at our own research demo field. We develop prototypes and run a pilot with a set of 20-50 farmers with a demographic split. If the pilot is successful, we expand the trial to more farmers, usually >200, and we measure the impact and return on investment for farmers. Once we establish this, we develop training manuals and strategies to scale the innovation.
If the second farmer trial is successful, we fine-tune the product and plan for adoption into the Agro Supply product line. We carry staff and agents’ training on best practices. We continue to collect feedback from farmers through our toll-free line and via our agents. The feedback feeds into future product iterations and is recorded in our product feedback loop.
As part of our new product development, 20 farmers are currently trialing a yield index insurance. Our farmers earn between USD$100-$500 from an acre of land every season. Farming insurance is an emerging tool in climate risk management that can help ensure smallholder farmers are able to plant again the following season in the event of crop failure and encourage them to take risks to invest in their farms even when the climate is unpredictable. Besides providing farmers with drought-tolerant seeds, Agro Supply is also testing insurance together with other partners to strengthen farmer resilience.
